Columbine Living
Columbine is located in Jefferson County, where the Great Plains meet the Rocky Mountains. The first settlers came to the area in the late 1850s to mine for gold in the Pikes Peak Gold Rush. Farmers, hearing about the fertile land around the South Platte River, began homesteading in the early 1860s. Others followed to set up stores and businesses. The area began to grow very quickly in the late 1950s when Martin Marietta Corp. opened a plant in Littleton.

The parks in Columbine feature ball fields, courts, playgrounds, trails, and picnic areas. Foothill Park and Recreation District offers classes and activities for all ages as does South Suburban Park and Recreation District along with a nature center, two recreation centers, a senior and community center, two indoor and five outdoor pools, two ice arenas, batting cages, inline hockey rinks, a skateboard park, an outdoor BMX cycling trail, an indoor sports dome, an entertainment arcade and four golf courses.

Columbine Mill is one of the area’s most historic and oldest buildings. Everyone knew the structure, built in 1901 as a shipping and storage facility for Rough and Ready Flour, as Columbine Mill although that was never the official name. In 1918 the building was named the Columbine Mercantile Company but was still called Columbine Mill. A milling operation began there in 1920, shipping more than 60,000 bushel of wheat in 1921.

Named for Thomas Jefferson, Jefferson County is one of the original 17 counties in the bill creating the Territory of Colorado, signed in 1861 by President James Buchanan. In the following 20 years, the county become home to Colorado’s first railroad, and to Coors Brewing Company and the Colorado School of Mines. The county’s 774 square miles feature lofty mountains, rolling grassland, towering pines, shady oaks and clear streams. There are three national forests in Jefferson County: Pike, Roosevelt and Arapahoe.

One of the area’s biggest events is Western Welcome Week, held every August in honor of Richard Little, for whom Littleton is named. The 10-day festival includes a parade, fireworks, live performances, concerts, races, contests and a horse and pony show. Awards are given to the winners of various activities.

Denver, “The Mile High City,” is a short drive north of Columbine. A mix of cosmopolitan city life and the pioneer spirit, Denver offers a wide variety of things to see and do. The Denver Zoo has almost 700 species of animals, birds and reptiles on display. Bird World, Sheep Mountain, and Primate Panorama are highlights. The Colorado History Museum showcases early Western and Colorado history with exhibits and displays. To see how money is made, the U.S. Mint has tours of the presses stamping coins and printing bills. The building that houses the Mint is spectacular with murals, chandeliers and an abundance of marble. The State Capitol is another grand structure. The granite and gold dome is a highly visible landmark, and inside the dome are stained glass portraits of early pioneers. The entrance on the western side of the building has a special significance: the 18th step is exactly one mile above sea level. Four Mile Historic Park offers a look back in time with its restored buildings, ranch, and stagecoach rides.

Museums house a variety of art, artifacts and objects from prehistoric times to the present. The Denver Botanic Gardens contain 23 acres of native plants as well as plants from all over the world. Water gardens, Japanese gardens, and rock gardens grace the area. For those seeking a more interactive form of entertainment, Six Flags Elitch Gardens Amusement Park offers thrills for the young and the young at heart.
